As of today, I have really narrowed down what it is that I am doing with regard to image quality, sizing, etc., so that now I feel that I truly have some images that could be “final”: perfectly imperfect.

At what conclusions have I arrived? Well, first, I was trying to “update” images that really didn’t need it. I drew and redrew these images trying different approaches, line widths, and consistencies, but what I discovered is this: the images don’t need that much help. I have standardized the size of the card to “bridge-size” dimension, but other than that, the images stand on their own. They need clarification (and maybe a flip here or there and a fixed Roman numeral or two), but otherwise, they’re fine.

I am now trying to see how these images will shrink. I am essentially changing these cards, adding some modern touches here and there while trying not to change their appeal.
Update 15 Oct. 2023: As you can see from this image, I had intended to add small numbers to the pips for determining upright and reversed, etc., but after looking at the actual pips in this deck, there is no need. Every single suit is designed upright. The clubs here are all “topped” little maces; the cups are cups, the swords all have hilts at the bottom with the swords going up, and the coins, about which I was most concerned, have the lighter arch at the top. All’s well, and I will leave those pesky little numbers off of my images!

With The Moon and The Sun sketches complete, I have now finished the celestial triad of the final septenary of trumps, and I am really pleased with how things have been progressing.

A few more images down in my Rosenwald Tarot Project, tentatively titled “Rosenwald Redux Tarot.” The Tower was built brick by brick, but I am very happy with it. The Star gives me hope at least that the Trump sequence is nearing its end!

These last two have honestly been two of the hardest images to recreate well. I decided to “challenge myself” by drawing the Hanged Man as is, i.e., upside down. Wow. Ask me how to waste a couple of hours. And Death is complicated, of course, by simply being a skeleton with a scythe on a horse trampling two dead people, but I like the way things are going!

Strength simply did not look right until I realized that I have standardized the size of the cards. The original Strength is slightly narrower than the other cards, so she looked taller. Turns out it was an optical illusion: when I put something over part of the border, she slimmed right out.

My ultimate goal will be to produce a Rosenwald-based deck that I would enjoy using, so I am not trying to reproduce the images warts and all. For example, if Justice’s hand is too far over, I will move it; however, I don’t want to change the images too much because their simple nature is one thing that makes them so appealing.
